8th Grade Science Syllabus:
Welcome To Bromley East Charter School 8th Grade Science!!!!

My name is Mr. Albrecht and I would like to welcome everyone to my 8th grade science class. I am really excited about this upcoming school year and I have nothing but the highest of expectations for all of you. In order to get the most out of this class, I have listed a few guidelines below that will have to be followed throughout the school year to ensure a positive and productive learning environment for all.

Textbook: The text book that will be used this year for 8th grade science is the Glencoe Science Level Blue. Every student will have the opportunity to check out and keep a copy of the textbook at their house for the duration of the school year to use for reference and study. There will also be additional copies of the text book available in the classroom for various reading assignments and reference to concepts learned in 8th grade science.

Classroom Expectations: Please refer to Mr. Albrecht’s classroom expectations sheet as well as to the Bromley East Charter School “Parent/Student handbook”

Laboratory Safety: Please refer to the attached laboratory safety guideline sheet.

Grading: Assignments that are turned in on time at the beginning of class can receive up to 100% of the possible points. Assignments that are turned in any time after the beginning of class, but before the end of the school day are only eligible for up to 50% of the possible points. This means that any assignment that is one minute past the time it was due is considered late and the student only can receive up to half of the possible points if turned in on the same day it was due. Assignments that are turned in anytime beyond 4:00p.m. on the date they are originally due will receive an automatic grade of 0. The grading scale that will be used is as follows:

98-100 = A+ 88-90 = B+ 78-80 = C+ 68-70 = D+ 60 and below = F

94-97 = A 84-87 = B 74-77 = C 64-67 = D

91-93 = A- 81-83 = B- 71-73 = C- 61-63 = D-

Grades will be based on a combination of the following categories listed below:

• Daily Work Routine (Warm-Up, Behavior, Participation)

• Daily Homework and In-Class Work (including signed and returned progress reports)

• Laboratory ( Lab Assignments, Projects, and Presentations)

• Assessments (Quizzes, Tests, Projects, Presentations)

Progress Reports: Progress reports will be sent home at the end of the 3rd and 6th weeks each quarter in your students Friday folder. Each student will then be required to return his/her progress report at the beginning of the following week with a parent and/or guardian’s signature on it (for a 10 point grade with each report).

Make-Up Work (For excused absences only!!!!!): Students will have 2 school days for every day’s excused absence to make up missing work. Students that miss school due to unexcused absence and/or out-of-school suspension will receive zero credit for any missed work (but needs to still complete the missed work in order to be eligible for available extra credit later on).

Extra Credit: Extra Credit will not be given to those students who currently have missing or incomplete assignments and/or assessments. If a student does not have the time to finish his or hers assignment work for class, it is assumed that they also do not have any time to do extra credit work as well (This also includes extra credit given for un-used bathroom passes). However, any student that is completely caught up with all previously assigned work for the quarter may complete as much extra credit as he or she wishes to do so.

8th Grade Science Lab Safety Guide Lines:

Laboratory Safety Agreement

Science is an interesting subject to study from day to day. The laboratory experiments that you will perform in this class are a major part of the course of study. Experiments can be enjoyable, but only if certain precautions are taken to ensure the safety of everyone involved. As a result, all students will adhere to the following list of classroom management and laboratory rules every single day throughout the course:

1.) Absolutely no disruptive behavior (such as shoving, fighting, running, tripping

others, or throwing objects) will be tolerated during any experiment.

2.) You will follow all additional safety instructions given by Mr. Albrecht for each individual lab.

3.) Notify Mr. Albrecht of any broken equipment immediately so that proper disposal can take place. Do NOT pick up broken glass with your fingers or bare hands!

4.) If you should be injured during an experiment, you will notify Mr. Albrecht immediately so that proper care can take place.

5.) You will not add to, or change, any lab procedure unless Mr. Albrecht has approved such change.

6.) You will wear safety attire (such as safety goggles or gloves) when instructed to do so by Mr. Albrecht.

7.) When necessary, students that have long hair must have their hair tied back in order to avoid burning, or getting chemicals in, the hair.

8.) Eating and drinking is prohibited at all times during any lab.

9.) You will NEVER taste or consume any laboratory chemicals or materials that are used, unless specifically instructed to do so by Mr. Albrecht.

10.) You will pass the “Laboratory Safety Test” with a 100% in order to participate in

laboratory investigations.

11.) You will always follow all classroom management expectations set forth by Mr.

Albrecht and also by the Bromley East Charter School handbook.

If the above safety rules are followed during all laboratory investigations, then the lab itself will be a safe and enjoyable place to learn. However, violation of any of the above rules will result in natural consequences appropriate for each situation (according to Mr. Albrecht’s classroom expectations as well as to the Bromley East Charter School student handbook). Additionally, if violations of safety rules occur repeatedly, then a formal referral to the administration may also be issued.

So that I am aware that both you and your parents/guardians understand and agree with the above safety guidelines (as well as with the class syllabus), both of you are asked to please sign and date above my signature and return this paper to me as soon as possible. Failure to do so will result in you being prohibited from participating in any laboratory investigations in this class.
